Oxford University librarian sacked for allowing students to dance in library

Oxford University librarian sacked for allowing students to dance in library

An Oxford University librarian has lost her job after students filmed themselves doing the latest dance craze on her watch.
Calypso Nash, 23, was dismissed from St Hilda’s College after a video that shows students noisily performing a ‘Harlem Shake’ in the college library appeared on YouTube.
The dance became an internet sensation last month when five Australian teenagers posted online footage of themselves gyrating to a song of the same name, by US artiste DJ Baauer.
A petition has now been started by students, and the culprits, to have the librarian reinstated as she was ‘not in the position to stop it’.
Ms Nash was working there that night but had nothing to do with organising the event and had not been asked if it could go ahead.
In the video, posted on YouTube, a group of around 30 students are shown studying quietly in the grand surroundings of St Hilda’s.
Then a youngster dressed as an American footballer is seen dancing before the film cuts to all the students doing the Harlem Shake craze in fancy dress.
Another is dressed as a member of the jailed Russian pop group Pussy Riot, while others donned horses heads, a furry badger costume or appeared as weight lifters and a skier.
Some were seen dancing in the library aisles, while others were seen standing on chairs and on tables.
However, the 30-second long video clip, which has had more than 5,000 views, has sparked outrage amongst the senior staff members of the 120-year-old Oxford University College.
All the students who had been identified as taking part in the video have been fined by the Dean.
Librarian and graduate student Calypso Nash was sacked for not preventing the Harlem Shake taking place.
Oxford University said: “This is a matter for St Hilda’s College, they say they do not wish to make a comment at this time.”
Today students want Miss Nash back in her job as she just happened to be there at the time and are also calling for the fines to be rescinded as they shot the video late at night as not to disturb anyone studying.
At St Hilda’s Junior Common Room weekly meeting, students passed a motion calling for the immediate reinstatement of the librarian.
As a result of the vote the JCR president Esther Gosling is to “ask for a written reason for the decision from the Head Librarian, and also to bring the matter to the attention of the governing body, calling in the strongest terms for Calypso to be rehired.”

Big Mistake : Facebook and Instagram are down for some users around the world

While you can
open the apps, they’re missing major functions
Facebook and Instagram appear to be partially down for some users around the world today. While you can open both platforms, it looks like you can’t send or receive messages on either platform, and you can’t post new content either.
WhatsApp appeared to be fine for many people, but users in Paraguay, India, Bangladesh, Argentina, and more note that they are experiencing issues with sending messages. DownDetector indicates that those in Brazil were experiencing the most severe outages.
We tested multiple accounts at The Verge, and found that Messenger couldn’t load at all on desktop, although the mobile app was working. Instagram was worse: posts weren’t loading, Instagram Stories were down, and direct messages and the button to post new content were also not working. Facebook’s ad section was not functioning either, and it led to an internal error when you tried to buy an ad.
About an hour after
users noted the outage, Facebook responded on Twitter:
Facebook On Twitter

How to Utilizing Reading Techniques in Antiracist Learning

How to Utilizing Reading Techniques in Antiracist Learning

Antiracist Books Temporarily Out of Stock
After the USA protests over George Floyd’s death
“Antiracist Books Temporarily Out of Stock” and police brutality
have intensified recommended reading lists for white people to better
educate themselves about racism have cropped up all over the
internet.
So we must ask our selves How To Utilizing reading techniques in
Antiracist Learning?
Apparently, some white people are taking those recommendations to
heart: Antiracist books have climbed the bestseller lists and in many
cases temporarily sold out at Amazon and other online book retailers.
At Amazon, White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to
Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo and How to Be an Anti-racist by
Ibram X. Kendi were a top its bestseller list for all books.
In addition to adult non-fiction .. children’s books about
racism are also selling briskly .. an indication that parents and
other adults want to talk about race with the children in their
lives.
One problem with this sudden rush of sales is how many of
Antiracist Books are now out of stock along with several other books
in a list of the top sellers.
This isn’t just an issue at Amazon either At
Bookshop.org
(an online retailer for independent bookstores) both White Fragility
and How to Be an Antiracist are only available on back-order.
Most of these titles are still available on
Barnes
& Noble’s website
, but interested customers may want to
order quickly or get an e-reader Some including : How to Be an
Antiracist and White Fragility .. but are sold out there too!!.
However, despite this crisis
MAKTABIOS
present to you our
nominations with a brief summary for the best anti-racism books.
Waking Up White (Debby Irving)
A little bit “racism for beginners” this book takes on a
narrative form and walks through systemic racism and how it benefits
the white author in a clear accessible manner.
Between the World and Me (Ta-Nehisi Coates)
Coates attempts to answer the questions of racism in a letter to
his son. He takes the biggest concerns of racist American history and
frames them through personal stories of his racial awakening.
White Fragility (Robin Diangelo)
Robin explains that racial segregation is set up to protect white
people from the discomfort experienced when presented with inequity
and challenges to white norms. If you identify as progressive or
liberal this is for you. Diangelo spells out how white progressives
are responsible for the perpetuation of inequity.
The New Jim Crow (Michelle Alexander)
Alexander explains how the United States criminal justice system
functions as a system of racial control. By targeting black men
through the War on Drugs and other movements that have decimated
communities of color .. millions of people are permanently relegated
to second-class status by a system that formally follows principles
of colorblindness.
The Color of Law (Richard Rothstein)
Rothstein methodically an…

Global Libraries Standards: Biblio Commons

Global Libraries Standards: Biblio Commons

Standards … You may have heard this term one day
But what are the standards and who defines them and who is
based on documenting them ?
Unified standards in the field of libraries, documentation and
information are an indispensable tool for both library management and
librarians. Without them, libraries become mere stores of information
vessels only. We can imagine libraries and their bleak picture if
each of them had its own classification, and its separate indexing
rules.
Standards are a necessary tool in the technical processes,
evaluation in library services, and planning for the creation of new
libraries and the improvement of existing one.
The reasons that led to the use of unified standards in the
field of libraries and information in essence are the same reasons
that led to their entry into other fields and sectors.
Library Standards in the World is your window to keep abreast
of what is new in the field of libraries and information regionally
and internationally.
We are seeking to find an audience that is aware of all
developments regarding the new standards for libraries, projects,
various agreements, modern technologies, and others.
We will discuss three important and comprehensive points about
Unified standards in Libraries, as follows:

Global Libraries Standards: Library Resource Management

Global Libraries Standards: Library Resource Management

Standards are used as broad lines and guidelines for the
processes related to planning and implementing Library services.
Standards are not a substitute for planning, but rather they
are levels that represent the minimum requirements and resistances
necessary for Library service. If they exceed this limit, they are
acceptable, effective and recognized .. and If it fails to reach this
minimum, it will be ineffective and unacceptable.
From this standpoint, setting and developing unified standards
that guide libraries and information centers becomes an urgent
necessity, especially when planning library or documentary services
followed by evaluation of their performance.
As a continuation of The Global Libraries Standards Articles ,
we present a new standard “
Library Resource
Management
