MindWorks is a compendium of 43 of my wildest short stories, compiled from several of my own anthologies, as well as stories that appeared elsewhere, and some brand-new ones too. It includes two stories from the Scythe universe, in preparation for the upcoming Scythe prequel. I think my favorite story though is one about a very unconventional presidential election. What inspired MindWorks ? I often have ideas that dont feel big enough to be a novel but are worth exploring. Also, I find short stories to be a great medium for experimenting with new styles and new voices. I loved the Twilight Zone growing up and a lot of these stories have that sort of surreal, macabre feel. Such as a street artist who inexplicably finds monsters lurking in his urban murals. Or a universe where reality is defined by what the majority believes reality to be. Comically absurd concepts like a root canal so deep it taps into another dimension. As well as more serious topics such as the psychology of a school shooter seen through the eyes of the weapon he is about to use. Mindworks was a break from the meticulous worldbuilding of Scythe , Unwind, or All Better Now. As my publisher curated the collection, we likened the book to a cabinet of psychological curiositieswhich is exactly what the artist created for the cover! What was something challenging or surprising about writing MindWorks ? As many of these stories were previously published, I found myself doing entire rewrites to make them up-to-date both in terms of technology and culture, as well as changing things I felt I could write better now. It was quite a surprise to see how many things in the stories I wanted to change. In fact, some of them are barely recognizable from the originals. Also, it was a challenge figuring out how to organize them, as there are so many different styles, voices, and such varied subject matter. The order in which they are told matters. I ultimately decided to break the compendium down into seven subsections, such as Forces of Nature, The Living, the Dead, & the Undecided, and my favorite subtitle, Angels, Demons, Monsters, and a Tree. What are you working on now? This month, Im deep into the Scythe prequel, which Im calling Rising Thunder . It has been both a challenge and a real joy. It dives into the origins of the Thunderhead and the earliest days of the Scythedom; readers will get to know the Founding Scythes and how they first came together. Spoiler alert: the Founding Scythes were all teenagers who met on social media. I hinted at a lot of lore in the original trilogy; now I get to take that lore and really fill it out. This time I get to cut deep. Im curious to see how many reader theories will align with what Ive schemed up. Fans have always surprised me with what they catch on to. Do you have any upcoming events that youd like to tell our readers about? This fall, Im heading to Australia for the Supanova Festival in Adelaide, then Perth, then Brisbane. From there, I go to Singapore for the Singapore Writers Festival and some school visits.
