He is the co-author of the Dungeons & Dragons Young Adventurers Guides from Ten Speed Press. Socials: Insta: @Wheelergram Who is the author that made you want to be an author? My dad was an author, so its thanks to him that I always knew this was a real possibility! Uncanny X-Men writer Chris Claremont was a huge inspiration as well; he really understood the connection between reader and character. And Terry Pratchett, of course! No-one deconstructed the fundamentals of fantasy more brilliantly than Terry! What research did you have to do for this book? I was the newbie on board, which is to say I had only been playing D&D a scant handful of years before Jim and Stacy brought me in, I think in part because I was less familiar with the rules side of the game and could concentrate on the wonder! These books are about the joy of imagination. We dont do stats around here. What do you hope readers take away from your book? Inspiration! I had so many books about lore and worldbuilding when I was a kid, from the iconic Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe to Osprey books about warriors and weapons, and I took so many ideas for my own stories from those formative works. I want these books to have the same inspiring influence on young readers today! What are you working on now? I have some really fun D&D projects coming up that are designed to help players and dungeon masters to hone their craft, including The Dungeon Masters Campaign Journal and The Players Campaign Journal . Im also editing a new and unofficial anthology, The New Hotness , filled with charming and powerful stories about tieflings and hornfolk by comic creators including Rye Hickman, Anthony Oliveira, Katie Shanahan, Megan Kearney, and many more! That project will be crowdfunding in 2026, so visit TOComix.com for updates! Recommend a few books you love and want to share with readers. I recently read and loved Rainbow Rowells Simon Snow trilogy of books, which I hope doesnt stop at a trilogy! She writes the sort of books Id love to have had as a teenager. The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller is a masterpiece, a beautiful tragic romance that deserves to be a modern classic. And after years of resistance to audiobooks, Ive discovered theyre great company on a walk or doing chores, so Ive been busying my way through Richard Osmans charming Thursday Murder Club series! The Warriors & Wizards Compendium collects together all the character-focused material from across the eight titles in the Dungeons & Dragons Young Adventurers Guides series, along with some all-new content that reflects the games 50 th anniversary rules set. Its packed with information and artwork intended to spark the readers imagination about the kinds of characters and stories they want to create at the gaming table (and maybe beyond!). What research did you have to do for this book? For this particular book, we had to do a careful read-through of the new Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks released for the games 50 th anniversary, which provide an updated version of the 5 th edition rules. We wanted to ensure that the new Warriors & Wizards Compendium reflected those changes, so new players wouldnt face any confusion as they moved from our books to the gaming table. What do you hope readers take away from your book? Confidence in their own imagination. Dungeons & Dragons is a game, but it can also be a framework for exploring creativity and communal storytelling. The book is filled with prompts and questions that encourage readers to engage their own imagination to expand on the books topics, from spells and skills to designing dungeons and even whole worlds. What are you working on now? Im juggling a few different projects, including an original Dungeons & Dragons graphic novel thats still in early development, and a fun manga adaptation of a romantasy novel thats quite close to completion. Im also getting ready for next springs publication of Dungeons & Dragons Crochet: A Book of Many Patterns . The four designers Sharon Posey, Alysia Sly, Rebecca Stone and Lydia Viatoris created some fantastic patterns and I cant wait to finally share them with the crafting community! What is one thing that adult you would go back and tell younger you, that you wish you had known? Those strange, weird bits of your brain that people keep suggesting you need to tone down? Theyre fine. Some of them will even turn out to be useful in your adult career. You should probably play more video games, though, because your hand-eye coordination could use the practice. Jim Zub is a writer, artist, and art instructor based in Toronto, Canada. Over the past twenty years hes worked for a diverse array of publishing, movie, and video game companies, including Marvel Comics, The Walt Disney Company, Capcom, Hasbro, Cartoon Network, and Bandai Namco Entertainment. Hes been writing the official Dungeons & Dragons comic series since the launch of the fifth edition in 2014. He is the co-author of the Dungeons & Dragons Young Adventurers Guides from Ten Speed Press. Socials: @jim_zub Twitter: JimZub Give us the elevator pitch for your book. The Warriors & Wizard Compendium is a visual guidebook to Dungeons & Dragons , the biggest and most popular tabletop role-playing game in the world! By reading through this guide, people new to TTRPGs will learn what options they have to create fantasy heroes from their imagination. What inspired your book? I grew up playing D&D and it lit a fire of inspiration and creativity in me that has never died. Getting the chance to ignite that same spark in someone else and bring them into the hobby is an incredible honor and also a full circle cycle of nostalgia with my youth. What was something challenging about writing this book? Distilling down a wild amount of options and information about D&D to only the key aspects without losing the flavor of the game and many worlds available to explore was really difficult, but also a useful exercise for me as a long time fan of the game. Focus is key. What research did you have to do for this book? Reading, rereading and summarizing dozens of D&D game and sourcebooks along with tapping into material from my extensive collection to include some deep cut fan Easter Eggs. What are you working on now? Im the flagship writer for Conan the Barbarian , writing the monthly comic book adventures of the original sword & sorcery hero being published by Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics. There are 26 issues (collected into 6 books) out so far, and many more to come. What is one thing that adult you would go back and tell younger you, that you wish you had known? Its possible to keep being a big kid while also being an adult. Every day I get to engage my imagination and play while also building my career. Like any other job, it can be stressful at times, but also keeps me excited to bust away on story after story and project after project.
